Columbia Waterfront

Columbia Waterfront is a mixed-use community of manufacturing and residential zones and has a large proportion of foreign born immigrants.  The Port Authority leased Red Hook Container Port cargo facility dominates the waterfront, and is a source of local employment.  Residents are advocating for greater waterfront access, and Port Authority is responding through a beautification project of the facility’s perimeter.
The City’s Columbia Street Urban Renewal Plan has influenced the construction of more low and moderate income housing in the neighborhood, which in turn has attracted more residents.  However, commercial growth has not kept pace with residential growth, and the area is in need of a more concentrated commercial revitalization effort.
