Tips for a Successful Student Volunteer Experience:

1) Be Prepared
Double-check that you have everything required of you for volunteering:  appropriate clothing, equipment/tools, lunch, etc. Make sure to check out the organization’s website.  Know the organization’s mission and learn about the goals of the volunteer project.  This is a good way to ensure your expectations for the volunteer experience match well with the organization’s expectations of you as a volunteer.

2) Be Professional
Maintain a respectful and professional manner in both your verbal and written communication with the organization and other volunteers.  Convey to your supervisor and fellow volunteers that you really want to be involved in the volunteer project.  Also, don’t forget to thank the organization for the opportunity to work there once your service is complete.

3) Be Proud
This is the time to discover or build your talents and let them shine.  Are you good with electronics?  Do you make people smile?  Are you super organized?  Whatever your strengths, use them to enrich your volunteer experience.  Be proud of who you are and let it show in your work.
